What happened when Duran Duran met Chic and Robert Palmer?

EMI are delighted to announce the release of a new edition of the debut album by THE POWER STATION, to celebrate – remarkably – its 20th Anniversary. It’s big, bright, bold, daft, flamboyant and fun. It’s the sound of the 80s meeting rock of the 70s and the soul of the 60s. Few records have ever sounded quite so ferocious and, well, very, very loud. It’s a souvenir from an era when pop stars believed in dressing up rather than dressing down.

By 1984, the wheels had momentarily fallen off the Duran Duran juggernaut. From nought to worldwide success in less than four years, the band, like many others before them, found that it had all gotten a bit too much for them and the members needed some time apart. Had it been a decade earlier, the group would have all made solo albums about mystical hermits. But John Taylor was far too smart for that. These were new times. As the original synthesiser of punk and funk within Duran, he capitalised on a happy accident and masterminded one of the most successful albums of 1985.

THE POWER STATION was not originally going to be either a band or an album. Taylor knew he wanted to record with Chic drummer Tony Thompson, and make a version of T. Rex’s “Get It On”. After original vocalist Bebe Buell dropped out, he, Thompson, and his Duran cohort Andy Taylor sought a new singer. But they were now at a level where a small ad in Melody Maker would simply not suffice. They considered a revolving door policy with frontmen until partying acquaintance Robert Palmer arrived. His experience and musical erudition were warmly welcomed to the proceedings. “Get It On” was duly recorded with producer Bernard Edwards, then looking to equal his ex-Chic partner Nile Rodgers production triumphs with David Bowie and Madonna. From its spontaneous creation, the working arrangement gelled, and an album quickly followed.

As Taylor had learned to play bass a handful of years earlier to Chic’s Good Times, here he was, playing with that record’s drummer and being produced by the person who played the original part. The surprise and joy of John and Andy Taylor recording with their heroes at the New York studio which was to give the group its name courses deeply through the groove. Andy Taylor was unfettered and splashed his big rock guitar across the recording, creating a big, bright urban sound that was both of its time, yet strangely timeless.

Using every trick in the book to capture Thompson’s massive drums (including recording them down lift-shafts), their debut single, “Some Like It Hot”, a mêlée of bubbling horns and clipped guitar, shot to No. 12 in the UK and No. 6 in America. The seven other cuts, a mixture of originals and covers, helped the album reach the Top 20 both sides of the Atlantic.

In addition, there are now seven bonus tracks, including the Michael Des Barres-voiced “Someday, Somehow, Someone's Gotta Pay” from the Arnold Schwarzenegger action pic Commando, appearing for the first time on a Power Station album, as well as a plethora of mixes that filled the ever-burgeoning single formats of the time.

And on top of all that, to complete this deluxe Power Station experience, the DVD features: the band in behind the scenes studio footage, interviews, the videos to ‘Some Like It Hot’ and ‘Get It On’ along with a bonus live version of ‘Some Like It Hot’ from Saturday Night Live, the only existing live footage of the band from that era performing with Robert Palmer.

Today, unbelievably, Palmer, Thompson and Edwards are no longer with us, while John and Andy Taylor are once again conquering the world with the reformed Duran Duran. Hear what they did on their holidays all those years ago, and whatever you do, play it loud.

Duran Duran to film Concert, and it will be released on DVD !!!

Duran Duran, in association with Coming Home Studios, will be filming two shows from their UK tour for an upcoming television special and DVD. The film will be directed by Larry Jordan and shot in High Definition.

The last two shows, on April 30th and May 1st, wrap up Duran Duran's triumphant return to the UK stage. There seems no more fitting a setting to capture the magic of the band's stellar live performance then the last two - out of five - sold out shows at Wembley Arena.

Since the original members of Duran Duran re-formed in 2001, audiences in the UK, North America, Australia and Japan have been treated to an amazing series of concerts that has garnered rave reviews from the fans and media alike. The band look forward to giving viewers an intimate peak into a true rock n' roll show.


Live Aid finally gets DVD release

The 1985 Live Aid concert, one of the defining events in modern music, is to be released on DVD for the first time.
Organisers will auction the rights to release the DVD after pirate copies were found for sale on the internet.
They are hoping to raise "a few million pounds" for charity and are aiming for a Christmas release.

The concert, split between London and Philadelphia, brought together stars including U2, Queen and Madonna - but has never come out on CD, video or DVD.

Organisers have decided to allow the DVD release after realising bootleggers were making money from it - but none was going to charity.
Proceeds from the DVD release will go to the Band Aid Trust, which still exists to relieve poverty and hunger in Ethiopia and the surrounding area.
Bob Geldof "sees it as an asset of the people of Ethiopia" that was not being fully utilised, according to fellow founding Band Aid trustee John Kennedy.
"It's a surprise to all of us that we're still here 20 years on spending and receiving money," he told BBC News Online.
"But because of piracy, it's becoming available without earning any money."

The successful bidder will have to get the permission of every artist - but "we don't expect any of them to be anything other than co-operative", he said.
Geldof organised Live Aid and the Band Aid single in response to famine in Ethiopia, in which 1.2 million people starved to death in 1984 and 1985.

Live Aid saw 72,000 pack into Wembley Stadium in London to see artists such as David Bowie, Wham! and Dire Straits.
The 16-hour music marathon was completed at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium with acts including Bob Dylan, Duran Duran and Paul Simon.
Live Aid eventually raised £40m. Half of the money was spent on food and half on long term development.
The DVD plan comes after pirated DVDs were found on sale over the internet for £110 for a 10-disc set.

After a tip-off from Geldof himself, police raided a property in Skelmersdale, Lancashire, and arrested a man.

“Greatest” 2-DVD Video Collection Now Certified Platinum

Hollywood, CA, March 10, 2004 – Capitol Records/EMI will reissue the concert film Arena (An Absurd Notion & The Making Of Arena) DVD, the Sing Blue Silver DVD tour documentary, and the Arena live concert CD on May 4, 2004. These releases offer special insight into the lives of Duran Duran and the hysteria that engulfed them. Nearly every moment of Duran Duran’s 1984 “Arena” world tour (51 shows in 43 cities over 79 days for over half million fans in the United States and Canada) was captured by a documentary film crew. Both DVDs have been remastered and capture mesmerizing live performances from one of the most important and innovative tours of the decade. The Arena CD is remastered with two bonus tracks.

Arena (An Absurd Notion & The Making Of Arena) DVD

Arena is the legendary Duran Duran concert filmed in Oakland, CA by director Russell Mulcahy. Part live concert and part sci-fi adventure, Arena finds the band in battle with the original Duran Duran (actor Milo O’Shea) from the cult film “Barbarella”. Elements of Max Headroom and Mad Max (as seen in the video for “Wild Boys”) are combined with one of the most exhilarating live concerts of that decade. The remastered DVD shows the concert in extraordinary sight and sound.

Included is a host of unreleased extras is the “Making of Arena", a documentary that reveals the creative processes involved, how each band member contributed ideas and how 1 million pounds were spent on extraordinary sets, stunning costumes, original dance sequences and visual effects. It also helps to explain director Russell Mulcahy’s motto “If I can imagine it, then I can film it”. Extras include the film trailer, TV commercial, video megamix, the video for “Save A Prayer” live and an interview with Simon LeBon.

The Arena DVD will be packaged in a clamshell box containing an 8-page poster booklet, and a sheet of stickers of the band members and characters from Arena.

Sing Blue Silver DVD

The entire North American leg of the Arena tour was filmed for this documentary. Sing Blue Silver, while not as well known as Arena, is a brilliant look into the life of the world’s biggest pop band at that moment. It provides true behind the scenes footage offering a fascinating portal into the fun, glamour, agony, ecstasy and ultimate glory of 3 months on the road. Witness Simon, Nick, John Roger and Andy thriving on the pressures, psyching themselves up pre-stage and then delivering incredible shows night after night to thunderous responses. Inner workings of backstage are revealed through the production manager, tour manager and road crew who are frequently fraught with last minute panics and touring nerves. Hoards of hysterical Duran fans are seen stampeding into arenas and chasing down the band’s limo.

Sing Blue Silver provides the best pure live footage from various shows on the Arena tour. Mixed in 5.1 surround sound, Sing Blue Silver sounds remarkable. Sing Blue Silver captures the excitement and hysteria that was, and still is, the live Duran Duran experience.

Arena CD with bonus tracks

The Arena CD is the live Oakland, CA concert on CD. It includes all the mega-hits like “Hungry Like The Wolf”, “Save A Prayer” and for the first time, “Girls On Film” and “Rio” have been added to the reissue.

For a band that utilized the video format as vibrantly as the their music, these releases give the Duran Duran fan vehicle to re-experience the magic of a phenomenon. These releases follow in the success of the recently released Duran Duran Greatest 2-disc DVD that compiles most of their legendary music videos. “Greatest” has just been certified platinum by the RIAA.

Duran Duran has recently reunited with the original line-up from the Arena tour. The five original members of Duran Duran Simon LeBon (vocals), Andy Taylor (guitars), Roger Taylor (drums), John Taylor (bass) and Nick Rhodes (keyboards) are currently playing stadiums and arenas in their home country, England through April and May. They are recording a new album and have one new song “Sunrise” featured on the recently released Capitol Records soundtrack to the hit TV show “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy”.

Capitol Collects Duran Duran's 'Greatest' from Billboard.com
While the original members of Duran Duran make progress on their first studio album since 1983's "Seven and the Ragged Tiger," Capitol has compiled the two-disc DVD video anthology "Greatest," due Nov. 4, Billboard.com has learned. The set features all the videos from the U.K. group's 13-year Capitol tenure, beginning with 1981's "Planet Earth" up through 1994's "Come Undone."

Beyond celebrated clips such as "Girls on Film," "Hungry Like the Wolf," "Rio," "Wild Boys" and "The Reflex," "Greatest" is loaded with extras. A long, uncensored version with an alternate ending and a short, uncensored version of "Girls on Film" are included, as are four versions of "New Moon on Monday," a club version of "Planet Earth," a censored version of "Come Undone," interviews and a U.K. TV commercial for "The Wedding Album."

A DVD-ROM component features a 30-minute audio Q&A session with Nick Rhodes and Simon LeBon taped in 1999, plus a photo gallery with 80 career-spanning images and lyrics to each song featured on "Greatest." In June, Capitol released "The Singles Box 81-85," a 13-disc boxed set reproducing the group's original singles.

Duran Duran has a handful of dates on its schedule, including a previously announced Sept. 20 appearance alongside the Cure and Echo & the Bunnymen at KROQ's Inland Invasion concert. November dates in North America are expected, after which the group will open shows for Robbie Williams in Auckland (Dec. 6), Melbourne (Dec. 10) and Sydney (Dec. 13).

Warren`s third and fourth solo albums, to be released world wide
One Way Records will release Warren`s third and fourth solo albums (Roadrage and The Blue) on October 23, 2001. Roadrage, a collection of live performances from the mid-1990s, includes the acoustic "Suddenly Spring" as well as showcasing the live rock trio sound of Warren, Joe and Wes on many songs (including "Ordinary World"). "TV Mania was actually finished about 5 years ago now and Nick says  he thinks it sounds better now than when they completed it! Sadly, at  the moment, it is unlikely to see a release before the new Duran  Duran album. However, he does promise that one day it will be  released. Nick & Stephen
Nick and Stephen TinTin Duffy (Duran Duran's singer before Simon Le Bon) have been working on a record of original Duran Duran work circa 1979. Working title was understood to be Duran '79.

The official Duran Duran site has provided the latest information on the project saying that the duo will be putting out the record under
a band name of `The Devils'! Apparently, it is completed apart from final mixes.

We'll have more information, including release details as soon as we get them.

Record Collector says that Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy is re-recording  songs that he co-wrote with Nick Rhodes and they will be Released on  an album entitled "Duran 79".
It is scheduled to be released in  November.

Track 1-10 on this picture disc recorded live at Olimpiyskiy Arena, Moscow; February 1/2001. Excellent soundboard quality. As an interesting bonus (track 11-15) this CD has a part of set recorded live at the House Of Blues, Los Angeles, CA, April 13/1995, performed by Simon LeBon and Warren Cuccurullo. As Chicago pop band The Smashing Pumpkins prepare to bow out of the music scene with one last tour of the major cities this fall, imusic.com has learned of a compilation tribute album set to be released next year,
possibly in mid-Spring. Such luminaries as Depeche Mode, Simon Le Bon, PJ Harvey and even R&B diva Missy Elliot are set to record tracks in upcoming months in homage to the Pumpkins, who recently announced that they would split at the years end. The expected tracklisting is as follows:
